CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Jess and Bodine rode back into Luden the following day. The two dead stinkers draped across their horses garnered more than a few looks from the locals. They rode straight for the jail and found the Sheriff sitting in a chair outside. He stood up as Jess slid from the saddle. Bodine stayed in the saddle and handed the two warrants on Tucker and Bass to the Sheriff. He identified them both and walked back over to where Bodine was. He saw the bloody stain on his leg.

“Those boys gave you a little something back, eh?” he asked as he smiled up at Bodine.

“They ambushed us,” announced Bodine.

“Where is the third one?”

“Lying dead on a saloon floor in a ghost town west of Grover,” Jess told him. “We didn’t stop to pick him up since his face is probably gone by now from all the critters.”

“Sheriff, will you wire the Sheriff in San Antonio and inform him that these two are dead?” asked Bodine.

“I’ll do it as soon as I take them to the undertaker,” he replied. “You best go and see the doctor and your friend…”

“Snyder pulled through?” interrupted Bodine excitedly.

“He shouldn’t have, but he did,” he answered smartly.

“Thanks Sheriff,” Jess said as he swung up into the saddle. The two of them rode slowly to the doctor’s office. Jess was helping Bodine down as the doctor walked out.

“I see you two made it back. Your friend is a tough one, but is looks like you need some tending to next.”

“Yeah, he got shot because he couldn’t move fast enough,” accused Jess. Bodine gave him a curt look.

“I can move just fine,” he retorted. “We got ambushed.”

“We do tend to move slower as we get older,” uttered the doctor.

“I’m not getting old,” he objected.

“Come on in and I’ll fix you up,” he chuckled. The three of them walked inside and down to the room where Snyder was. He was in a bed sipping on some soup. He put it down and smiled weakly at Jess and Bodine.

“I see you two are still alive,” he said in a weakened voice.

“Yeah, but I took a bullet for Jess,” bragged Bodine. Jess rolled his eyes slightly.

“Did you get any of them?” queried Snyder, a hopeful expression on his pale face.

“Bass, Tucker and Clancy ain’t breathing air anymore,” responded Jess. “How are you feeling?” Snyder closed his eyes for a few seconds and slowly opened them.

“I can’t move without getting dizzy,” he explained. “Almost passed out taking a crap yesterday. The doctor says I’ll be okay in a few months or so as long as I rest up and don’t exert myself.” The doctor tapped Bodine on the shoulder.

“I’ll get him into the hotel in about a week, but let me take care of that leg wound now,” he told Bodine.

Jess followed Bodine and the doctor into a room with a table. The doctor handed Bodine a bottle of laudanum after helping him up. Bodine took two longs swigs from the bottle and the doctor helped him lay down.
